Non-Surgical Treatment

Conservative Care

Before surgery is considered, Mr. Rath co-ordinates a structured programme of physiotherapy, pain management, and lifestyle intervention. Most back pain resolves without surgery.

Conservative Care — treatment

What the procedure is

Conservative care is not a single intervention — it's a co-ordinated programme of non-surgical management. This typically includes physiotherapy, pain medication review, weight and lifestyle optimisation, and activity modification. Mr. Rath works alongside specialist physiotherapists and pain management colleagues to design a programme tailored to your condition.

The goal is to reduce pain, restore function, and avoid or defer surgical intervention wherever safe and appropriate.

On the day

There is no single "day of procedure" for conservative care. We'll structure a plan at your consultation and review progress at intervals. If you're seeing Mr. Rath for a surgical opinion, he will typically confirm that appropriate conservative options have been tried before proceeding to surgery discussion.

For some patients, conservative care is the definitive treatment. For others, it provides pain relief while awaiting or preparing for surgery.

Why Mr. Rath's approach

Mr. Rath takes an evidence-based view: two-thirds of disc prolapses resolve with time, and surgery is not always the answer. He will not recommend an operation unless the clinical picture clearly indicates it and non-surgical options have been adequately tried. His practice includes both surgical and non-surgical expertise, so the recommendation you receive is not biased by surgical preference.

Risks and considerations

Conservative care is low risk by nature. The main risk is delay — in conditions such as cervical myelopathy or significant neurological compression, prolonged conservative treatment can allow irreversible nerve damage. Mr. Rath will tell you clearly if your condition is one where watching and waiting is not safe.
